What Actually Happens On Your Visit

On Your Arrival
Everything you need, including parking, is in your confirmation email. No sign-in sheet, no front desk. Tobin, our Head of School, meets you when you arrive. Before we step inside, we take a few minutes together to prepare you for a school that won't look like the one you grew up in.

Meet Your Learner-Ambassador
Once inside, a learner takes over. Your tour is led by one of our Learner-Ambassadors, not an adult. That's on purpose.
We believe young people can do amazing things, so we trust our learners with our most important guests. Your child gets to meet a new friend, and every question is fair game. And our learners are proud of what happens here. Welcoming your family is part of their real work.

See The Studios In Action
You'll see every studio on campus, and we'll linger in the one where your child would most likely begin. What's happening when you walk through depends on the hour: learners deep in Core Skills, sitting in one of the day's Socratic Circles, or closing the day with Studio Maintenance.
Along the way, we'll show you the systems and tools that equip young people to govern their own school day, and to govern themselves on the longer path to finding a calling that changes the world.
If your child wants to join in, they can sit in the discussion with their new friends. If they'd rather hang back and watch, that's fine too. Either way is a real answer, and we notice neither one as a problem.

Ask Us Anything
Questions are welcome the whole way through. At the end of the tour, we sit down together to make sure nothing went unanswered. Tobin will have a few questions for you and your child too. They help all of us figure out the right next step.
Why We Visit During the School Day
We intentionally invite you during a live school day, with your child, so you see a real Acton day in action. Not a performance. A Tuesday.
Then… What Happens After The Visit
If everyone agrees the exploration should continue, we invite your child to try on their new school, like a new pair of pants.
That means five consecutive shadow days as a full member of the studio. Real work, real freedoms, real community. At the end of the week, we share our honest observations and feedback with you, so your family can make an informed decision about beginning their Hero's Journey at Acton.
No pressure at any step. A school that needs to sell you isn't confident in what you'll see.

What real-world skills, experiences, and responsibilities are being built into their learning right now?

Are they being trained to recall the right answer or to wrestle with hard questions?
3. How does this school build character, not just credentials?
What does the school day look like when it's about learning "to be" and not just what to know?
4. What happens when my child fails? How is failure handled at this school?
Is failure treated as a problem to avoid, or a necessary part of learning?
5. Does my child have a real voice here?
Not just in concept... do they help write the rules, set the goals, and make decisions that actually affect their day?

How long does a visit take?

What should we bring?
Nothing but your child and an open mind. Your child isn't optional, by the way. The visit is for them as much as for you.
Will my child participate, or just observe?
Whichever your child prefers. Some join the Socratic discussion with their new friends. Some watch from the edge. Both are real answers.
Can siblings come too?
Please bring them. Older, younger, all of them. At Acton we enroll families, not just learners, because the Hero's Journey requires allies along the way.
What if my child is shy or does not want to talk to anyone?
Then they'll fit right in, because respecting a person's own pace is the whole point here. Every human being has their own speed of learning and exploring. One child dives into the fray. Another needs time to warm up from the edge of the room. Both are welcome on the visit, and both are welcome once enrolled. At Acton, learners go at their own pace: as fast and as far as they wish, or taking more time when it's needed. A quiet visit tells us nothing bad about your child. It just tells us how they explore.
What age groups will we actually see?
All of them. You'll tour every studio, and we'll spend the most time in the one where your child would likely begin.
What happens if we want to enroll after the visit?
We invite your child to five consecutive shadow days as a full member of the studio, then share our honest observations so your family can decide.
