As part of our personal story (The Slaven family - founders of Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale), we started with Nance and Florida Unschoolers two years ago when we chose to take our youngest daughter out of traditional school.
There were no problems. She was doing well, having attended tradtional school first in Maine, and then later attended a school year in Poprad, Slovakia (all education in Slovak).
Unlike some families who are in crisis when they make their tradition out of traditional education, our decision to begin Unschooling was driven more by the idea of what COULD her experience be if we did things differently.
Our older 4 children are all adults now. And like their parents, we are all the products of traditional public schools. All leading good lives. But... in many ways we survived our school years more than prospered by them.
Homeschooling was one option, but just taking the curriculum home seemed like 1) not the point and 2) a ton of work 😂
That's when we found Nance and Florida Unschoolers. And our two years of Unschooling (first de-schooling) prepared us for our introduction to the Acton Academy - an Unschooling model in a private microschool format.
The next step in our growth, was reading Courage To Grow which was an eye-opening experience to what was possible, if we banded together with other like-minded parents who see each individual as a Hero on their own Hero's Journey.
That book - and the desire for something better for our 8-year-old daughter, was the impetus for Acton Academy Fort Lauderdale. And we have Nance Confer to thank for providing the start and resources we needed when we began our path to Unschooling.
